Bullies In The Workplace - A Book Review

Those Bullies
And Bosses At Work Don't Stand A Chance
People complain bitterly about the problems they have
with a bully at work, but they don't know how
to change it because they're usually less powerful than the bully
harassing them.
Is there a bully at work making your life miserable? It makes me sick to read some of the "tips" I see online that
basically tell you that pushing back is easier said than done and
that you should just tuck your tail between your legs, quit and find another job.
BULL!
The best defense is a good offense. Leaving your job is NOT the only way to salvage your physical and
mental health.
Following, are my personal reviews of Work Laws Exposed and The
No Asshole Rule.

Work Laws Exposed
by The Undercover Lawyer - Curt K
While this e-book (available for instant download) is a bit on
the pricey side at $97, the information in it is worth ten times as
much. It's written by an employment law attorney. If you don't have the slightest idea how to deal with
bullies, a bad boss, discrimination, retaliation or hostility at work, this book will not only give you the
confidence you need to face the aggressor, but the legal ammunition - the actual step-by-step
instructions for putting an end it to once and for all...period!
They won't know what hit them.
I read all 143 pages of it from cover to cover in one sitting.
I couldn't put it down. It blew me away to find out that what
had been done to me while working for a Fortune 500 company was
illegal. I wish I had this information back then.
It clearly explains what type of behavior is illegal (it will
surprise you) and what you can do to not only
stop it, but prevent it before it happens. People buy car
insurance in the event of an accident. Consider Work Laws
Exposed insurance for the workplace. With the strategies that
you'll learn, you'll become bullet-proof. Your boss will not
be able to terminate you. It really is that powerful.
Bottom line, if you want a real Shock & Awe approach, the
ultimate Secret Squirrel gadget to fight those evil enemies in the
workplace, this is it. It's the ultimate can of whoop-ass.
Period!

The No Asshole Rule
by Robert I. Sutton, PhD.
I bought this book about about two years ago. Just from the
title alone I figured the author would be ballsy enough to come up
with a sure-fire way of dealing with bad bosses and bullies at work. I walked away empty
handed. While it's entertaining and describes the behavior of
some very famous
assholes in the workplace, I didn't come away with a personal actionable game plan.
I KNOW how to recognize assholes. I was surrounded by them.
Seriously.
He had some good advice for not becoming an asshole yourself, but
that didn't solve the problem that I was having with my co-workers and a
couple of my superiors. Kind words and "do onto others as you
would have them do onto you" doesn't work. The author did not
give an employee the knowledge and power one needs to take out the
bully. This book was geared more towards management.
On a high level, Mr. Sutton's solution is to implement a "no asshole rule" for
hiring and firing which basically translates into a personality pissing contest
of how much idiocy will be tolerated on the job. Posting "no jerk rules"
in the break room isn't going to stop it and what's a lowly worker
in the trenches supposed to do when it's management that's the
problem?
Pages 170-171 even gives some tips on how to BE an effective
asshole. Yikes, after reading Work Laws Exposed, I hope no
boss puts those tidbits into action.
Bottom line, if you want to instigate a sure-fire
vaccination at the office, you must train employees to follow
federal and state workplace laws. When you explain the
consequences of broken laws, it magically gets their attention and
heads will roll.
Like I said, the book is entertaining and
geared more towards a supervisory/management audience, do I can't recommend it
as a source for an employee in the trenches to end workplace problems.
- Good tips for weeding out the jerks before you hire
them.
- How to tell if you're an asshole and what to do
about it.
- How to avoid "asshole poisoning" by not letting
"them" rub off on you.
